A Day in the Life of a New Grassperson Employee

Written by Jack Moore | Mar 4, 2019 3:45:00 PM

You’ve checked out career opportunities at Grassperson, and you have a handle on what skills and experience our Texas lawn care service looks for in new team members. But, maybe you’re wondering what it’s actually like to work in the business? You love the idea of helping people in the Denton and Collin county, TX communities get the best yards on the block.

So, what will the first days and weeks be like if you’re hired as a Grassperson employee?

We’re glad you asked!

We think it’s important to understand the onboarding and training process before you join any company. What skills will you learn on the job, and who will mentor you as you learn the company’s processes and systems? Basically, you want to know what to expect. We get it.

So, sit back for a minute and pretend like tomorrow is your first day as an employee at Grassperson. Here is how your schedule will unfold during those first eight hours, the rest of that initial week, and as you grow comfortable in your new role. We will also answer some of the most common questions new employees ask us.

Your First Day of Work

Don’t worry—there’s no initiation and you won’t be asked to perform any crazy rituals! The first day in the office is mostly centered on taking care of administrative to-dos. You’ll receive an employee handbook and complete information to receive benefits. We’ll file necessary documentation (such as a copy of your driver’s license, proof of citizenship). And, you will be fitted for a company-provided uniform. If your size is not in stock, we’ll order it for you—and it takes about two weeks to come in. During the meantime, you’ll be given a set of Grassperson T-shirts you can wear with jeans and your own boots. (We do not provide footwear.)

Uniform Perk

The uniform perk is a real convenience for our team members. Every Friday, employees in the field receive two weeks worth of uniforms. The following week, they bring in dirty laundry, which is managed by a uniform vendor.

Weekly Pay

Another benefit is our weekly pay schedule. All employees are paid every Friday. We find that our crew members appreciate this pay frequency because it provides a stable cash flow, allowing them to support their lifestyle and families.

A Mentor

On your first day, you’ll be paired up with a team member who works in your division. This mentor might be your supervisor, or another experienced person on staff who will be by your side as you tour our facility, learn equipment operation protocol and safety, and begin understanding the exact tasks you’ll perform in the field.

Training and Education

We love to hire people with one to three years of lawn care experience to work as lawn care specialists—and we also appreciate landscape experience when we recruit for the landscape maintenance team. But, we don’t demand that landscape maintenance crew members have a large resume. We believe that great work ethic, drive and an interest in learning are the keys to success. People that bring these qualities to work at Grassperson are usually successful because we can train them to perform services.

Speaking of training, hands-on education in the field is provided by crew leaders and supervisors. Every day, new team members work alongside an experienced employee who shows them the ropes, addresses concerns and offers pointers. This training-in-the-moment is how we instill the values of quality, communication and professionalism.

Manager Check-Ins & Performance Reviews

As we said, new employees are always working alongside an experienced team member, so check-ins are happening all the time. And, this never changes. There’s a reason why we refer to our employees as team members: Our people work together daily to provide the best service to our customers.

Performance reviews occur on an annual basis and allow time for career mapping. We believe in doing more than filling positions and providing jobs. Grassperson is a lawn care company where people learn and grow fulfilling careers. Just read about the Day in a Life of a Lawn Care Specialist and you’ll see what we mean.

Answering Common Questions

Let’s tackle some questions our new team members frequently ask. And, we encourage you to reach out to us if there are other questions you have about working at Grassperson. We’d love to talk to you about our culture, training and career opportunities.

When will I earn paid time off?

Our lawn maintenance crew leaders receive paid time off based on their hours worked. Lawn care specialists begin accruing paid time off the first day they report to the job and can begin to use the time off after 90 days of work. Landscape maintenance crew members do not receive paid time off, but those who are motivated to rise up in the company can eventually earn that benefit.

When will I get a pay raise?

Team members can receive a pay raise every year, following their performance reviews. Also, we give pay raises based on performance. In some cases, we might hire a new team member and offer to increase his or her rate after their skills are proven in the field.
