Meet Adrian Murillo—Grassperson Landscape Crew Supervisor

Jack Moore

Adrian Murillo was looking for more than just a landscaping job. As a hard-working young person who had already held various roles in landscaping companies, he was ready for an environment that could offer a career track and support so he could build a future. So, he joined Grassperson in February 2018 as a landscape crew member. A friend referred him to the Lewisville, TX company, suggesting that Adrian would enjoy the family-run business and its caring culture.

Working in the outdoors is what drew Adrian to the industry in the first place. “I love to be outside, and I enjoy communicating with customers,” he says.

Training, mentorship and the opportunity to advance are what makes Grassperson a different type of organization, Adrian says. “Today, I run a crew of three other team members and we all really enjoy working together.”

The Door’s Always Open

Not only was Adrian encouraged to pursue a crew leader position, which he accepted less than six months after starting at Grassperson, he says the open-door culture makes it easy to ask anyone questions, including the owner.

“Jack, the owner, is always there asking us if we need anything, asking how the equipment is running and he’s willing to help,” Adrian says. “When you regularly communicate with the owner and he really cares about your job and what’s going on in the field, you get a great feeling. You know what you do every day makes a difference.”

Giving Customers the Best Lawn

Adrian leaves every property with a sense of pride that his team left the lawn looking much better than it did when they arrived. As a landscape crew leader, he is charged with doing a final check of each property on the route to be sure all services were performed up to Grassperson’s standards.

It’s always rewarding when a customer is home and comes out to talk to him and the crew. “They let us know if there’s something extra we can do for them, and we offer suggestions if we see any problems in the lawn,” Adrian says. “Our customers really appreciate the work we do on their lawns and they see the results. That’s the best part, when you pull away from a property knowing you made a customer’s life a lot easier and their lawn looks great!”

It’s All About the People

Adrian, 26, offers some advice for anyone looking for a landscaping job. First, find out if the company will provide you with training and a career path. What will it take to move up in the organization? “We talk about career pathways a lot here because it’s important that team members know they can grow in the company,” Adrian says.

The people make all the difference, Adrian adds. “It’s all about the people, and everyone here is supportive and wants to see you succeed.”
